Starter (for now) lifts Magic to win Times wires

ORLANDO - Ryan Anderson has been joking with Rashard Lewis about who will be the Magic's starting power forward when the All-Star returns from substance-abuse suspension. For now, Anderson is doing just fine.

Anderson had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Dwight Howard scored 25 as the Magic beat the previously unbeaten Suns 122-100 Wednesday.

"I can't do much more than what I'm doing now," Anderson said about starting. "I have a great opportunity to play now. Of course, it's Rashard Lewis. It's a given he's going to play. He's an All-Star. It will be great to even be his backup."

Coach Stan Van Gundy said he was impressed how Anderson came off his only poor performance this season Tuesday, when he was 1-of-11 on 3-pointers.

But he has said from the beginning Lewis will start when he returns. Anderson, who came over in the trade with Vince Carter from New Jersey over the summer, is only giving Orlando an added and, perhaps, overlooked piece.

"I've coached for a long time in a lot of different levels, and I've complained about a lot of things. I never recall myself upset or complaining that I have too many good players," Van Gundy said. "There the ones it will be tough on, not me. It will be easier on me. I'll have more options."

The Magic played without Carter. He sprained his left ankle Friday against New Jersey and aggravated it Tuesday against Detroit. He is day to day.

The Suns were without Leandro Barbosa for the third game. The guard, averaging 15.7 games, has an injured right wrist.

Pacers: Forward Troy Murphy, the team's leading rebounder at 9.7 per game, sat out against the Knicks and is out indefinitely with a bruised lower back.

Timberwolves: Forward Kevin Love said he is ahead of schedule in returning from a broken left hand. He had surgery Oct. 20 and was supposed to miss 6-8 weeks. But Love said he hopes to be cleared to practice Nov. 20, when doctors will check his progress.

Wizards: Former Florida guard Mike Miller is expected to miss 7-10 days after spraining his left shoulder in a collision with Miami's Mario Chalmers.

Female coach a first: Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman is set to become the first female coach in the NBA Development League. A news conference is scheduled for today to introduce her as coach of a team that will begin play in 2010-11 in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas, and be a Mavericks affiliate.
