As offensive plans go, this one doesn't sound all that bad for the Miami Heat .
Give it to Dwyane Wade. Let him take over. Win the game. "I think that's good for the team," rookie guard Mario Chalmers said after Wade scored 38 points to lift the Heat to a 105-99 victory against Oklahoma City Saturday night. "He doesn't really care who scores the points."
It's true that Wade has been a fine facilitator even though he's leading the league in scoring at 28.9 points per game. The problem for the Heat comes when Wade doesn't have a huge game or, like Saturday, when the offense stagnates with him on the bench.
The Heat led Oklahoma City 85-70 after three quarters. Wade started the fourth period on the bench and the Heat's offense went missing, allowing the Thunder to get back within 90-88. Then Wade returned and scored one basket and recorded three assists as the Heat held off the Thunder.
It wasn't like the Heat's victory last week at Utah, which both Wade and coach Erik Spoelstra have cited as the best example of a balanced Heat offense. So does Wade prefer doing it all or sharing the load?
"I prefer to win," he said. "Take it any way it comes. But the game is a lot easier when it is balanced all the way around.
"It is not really going to be like that every night. ... As long as the majority of the time everyone gets an opportunity to be a part of everything, that is all we can worry about."
Finding another consistent scoring option might be key for the Heat's bid to climb further above .500. The Heat is 6-3 when Wade scores at least 30 points but 5-6 when he doesn't.
"It is natural for guys to immediately look to him and hand the ball off to him and watch but it is not the game that we ultimately want to develop" Spoelstra said. "He's always going to be our go-to guy. He's so gifted to produce when it really matters.
"But we also want to develop and feature other parts of our offense and make sure it's a balanced attack."
Quinn, Beasley set
Guard Chris Quinn (ankle) and forward Michael Beasley (eye) both practiced Sunday and said they would be available tonight against Charlotte. Quinn missed the game after suffering an injury in practice Friday and Beasley left Saturday's game when he was poked in the eye.
