Miami Heat's Alonzo Mourning announces retirement

Miami Heat's Alonzo Mourning announces retirement
Jan. 22--Alonzo Mourning was as active as ever during the Heat's game Wednesday night against the defending champion Boston Celtics at AmericanAirlines Arena.

But Mourning was in a designer suit sitting in a baseline seat instead of a Heat uniform at center, intimidating opposing players on the court.

That's the closest he will get to helping the Heat this season -- or ever again. Mourning, a future Hall of Fame center, officially announced his retirement Thursday, ending a career of major accomplishments on and off the Basketball court.

"After 16 years, I feel it's best that I retire from the game of Basketball," Mourning said during an emotional news conference at AmericanAirlines Arena. "When you've got something you love and you're passionate about, it's hard to let that go. It truly is. It's not a sad day, but it's a day to celebrate."

Mourning, 38, has been rehabilitating a devastating knee injury he sustained in December 2007 that ended his Heat season. He had been working toward a return to the Heat but said as recently as Saturday he was contemplating the next phase of his life.

Mourning is considered the greatest player in the Heat's 21-year history, averaging 17.1 points and 8.5 rebounds in his career.

Among Mourning's accomplishments has also been his return from a 2003 kidney transplant. Mourning helped lead the Heat to a 2006 NBA championship and is the franchise's career leader in blocked shots, rebounds and games played.

Mourning leaves the game as a seven-time All-Star, two-time NBA defensive player of the year and 2000 Olympic gold medalist.

"At 38, I feel like I've physically done all I can for this game," Mourning said. "God knows it's been an amazing ride. He's blessed me with some amazing years."
