DRAFT PICKS:
Michael Beasley, F, 6-8, Kansas State -- The second overall pick is a superb talent, possibly the most talented player in the draft. He should make a big contribution. Mario Chalmers, G, 6-1, Kansas -- Nice player acquired in a draft-night trade with Minnesota. He should contend for minutes at backup point guard. Not likely to enter the season as the starter, but a solid addition.
PLAYER NOTES:
--F Michael Beasley said he's purchased a Bentley, Range Rover and Mercedes for himself and a Mercedes and a new house for his mother. Players usually don't know the exact day their contract money will be wired to their bank account. Beasley got his unexpectedly.
"I go to the ATM and I got out $60," he said. "I check my receipt. Whoa! It was kind of a surprise."
--C Alonzo Mourning, who sustained a serious knee injury in December, is still working out diligently in hopes of returning sometime around January. Mourning is 38 years old but would still be the Heat's best defensive center, above Mark Blount and Jamaal Magloire.
--C Joel Anthony, the 6-foot-9 second-year shot-blocker from Nevada-Las Vegas who played on Canada's Olympic team, has had an outstanding training camp.
"When we do our games in practice, I love when they say Joel is on my team because I know he's going to block a shot on one end and probably go down and catch a lob and dunk it on the other end," G Dwyane Wade said. "That's just the way he plays."
Anthony has to battle Mark Blount and Jamaal Magloire for playing time. Also, F Udonis Haslem has been splitting time at center in practice, perhaps as a way to get rookie F Michael Beasley on the court.
