It was a good season for the Heat, but it came up short in Game 7 at Atlanta on Sunday.
Miami has to be happy overall, however. It came back from a 15-win season to win 43 games and get the fifth seed in the playoffs. And it went seven games deep in the first round.
Not many players showed up for Game 7. Forward Udonis Haslem had a double-double in the first half (10 points, 11 rebounds), but guard Dwyane Wade was 4-for-13 from the field for 14 points. Center Jermaine O'Neal, still suffering the effects of a concussion he received in Game 5, got late medical clearance. He played 42 seconds and had two fouls and an airball.
The youngsters -- rookie guard Mario Chalmers, rookie forward Michael Beasley, second-year guard Daequan Cook, and second-year center Joel Anthony -- weren't yet ready for the bright lights of Game 7.
But Miami has some encouraging building blocks. The big question is whether center Jamaal Magloire and/or forward Jamario Moon will return. Both were on one-year contracts and both were key contributors.
The Heat has a host of players under contract for next season. Among the key players are Wade, Haslem, O'Neal, Chalmers, Jones, Beasley and Cook. Miami doesn't have a first-round draft pick and it won't have much money to spend in free agency. O'Neal's salary for next season is $23 million.
HAWKS 91, HEAT 78: Guard Dwyane Wade had 31 points but it wasn't enough to avoid a Game 7 loss to Atlanta on Sunday. F Udonis Haslem finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds but no other Heat player did much of consequence.
