"I talked to Quinny before the (Detroit) game," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Right now it's just a fluid situation."
The problem is when rookie guard Mario Chalmers gets into foul trouble, Quinn is hard-pressed to slow opposing point guards. And Chalmers has been getting into foul trouble a lot recently.
"I can't really do anything," said Chalmers, who ranks fifth in steals at 1.91 per game.
The more Chalmers gets whistled, the more he loses his aggressiveness. So Spoelstra decided to shift Wade back to the position he played as a rookie. Only Spoelstra won't totally commit to the idea.
"I don't know how much we'll be going to him for sure at backup," Spoelstra said.
It worked Saturday against New York. In fact it's worked the last three games.
The payoff on the other end of the rotation is guard Daequan Cook can get in the game alongside Wade, who gets Cook plenty of open looks.
So for now, plan on Wade being the backup point guard.
HEAT 120, KNICKS 115: Dwyane Wade had his lip cut on an inadvertent elbow by New York's Danilo Gallinari in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game. Wade was irate because no foul was called. The Heat was trailing by 15 at the time, but for all intents and purposes the game was over. The Heat had won because Wade, who finished with 42 points, eight rebounds, 10 assists, four steals and three blocks, was that mad.
"It was a simple game plan in the fourth quarter," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Just get them to take a shot at Dwyane and make him bleed. And at that point it (ticked) him off, it (ticked) off the rest of the team. Our intensity level went through the roof.
"The next timeout after that whole skirmish, we just simplified everything. Wrote down the play. I said, 'We're in the bonus.' I said, 'Get the (heck) out of Dwyane's way.' He had that look in his eye we haven't seen since (the 2006 NBA Finals against) Dallas."
After Wade's cut lip, Miami went on a 19-0 run to take a lead at 107-103. It was the Heat's longest run of the season. Wade had 24 fourth-quarter points, 21 after his lip was cut.
