The Heat enters the All-Star break in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, but it could have some big decisions to make by the time the three-day weekend is over. It'll definitely have some big decisions to make before Thursday's trade deadline.
That means the Heat team that takes the court for Wednesday's game against Minnesota could be much different from the one that took the court in previous games this season. The Heat is believed to be in the mix for Toronto forward/center Jermaine O'Neal and Phoenix forward/center Amare Stoudemire. Either would be an upgrade over the current center mix of Joel Anthony and Jamaal Magloire.
Heat president Pat Riley has been outspoken about his preference for a strong presence down low at both ends of the court. Expect him to be aggressive in that pursuit.
However, the Heat is also believed to want to stay in the mix for the 2010 free-agent class that could include Toronto's Chris Bosh. O'Neal allows that because his $23-million a year contract ends after the 2009-10 season. But Stoudemire has a player option for $17.6 million in the 2010-11 season.
Heat forward Shawn Marion and his expiring $17.8 million contract is the biggest attraction for trades, but rookie forward Michael Beasley's name has been mentioned, too. It's not clear whether the Heat would include Beasley in any deal just as it's not clear whether Phoenix would want to take Marion back.
Right now it appears the Heat has enough to make it to the playoffs. But its current roster might get it a No. 6, 7 or 8 seed, which could mean a first-round match-up against Boston, Cleveland or Orlando.
Then again, the current roster has the Heat in the No. 5 position, so Riley might not feel pressure to make a move.
HEAT 95, BULLS 93: F Shawn Marion's lay-up with one second left delivered the victory for the Heat (28-24), which enters the All-Star break in fifth place in the Eastern Conference.
It was a wild finish down the stretch against the Bulls. Prior to Marion's game-winning lay-up, G Dwyane Wade (24 points) stole the inbounds pass from G Thabo Sefolosha with 3.5 seconds left. But that was after Wade fumbled a pass underneath the basket with 4.7 seconds left and the game tied at 93.
Chicago tied the game when G Daequan Cook fouled G Ben Gordon with 6.5 seconds left and the Heat ahead, 93-90. Gordon made all three free throws to tie the game.
