Jamaal Magloire got his first start Monday against Atlanta, putting second-year center Joel Anthony on the bench. The Heat likes Magloire's muscle and presence inside. It's a trait Miami has been missing since Shaquille O'Neal and Alonzo Mourning have been gone.
Magloire (6-11, 265) had been somewhat of a bruiser since his Nov. 28 debut, throwing bodies around with reckless abandon. "Everybody always knows when he's in the game," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I think that's important. We like that."
But Magloire is finding some of the touch that made him an All-Star for New Orleans in the 2004 season. His challenge is regaining that form.
"Absolutely, I can completely get back to the '04 conditioning and shape I was in," Magloire said. "I basically didn't play last year -- injuries set me back. I was out maybe six weeks at the beginning of this year (with a broken hand), so it's all starting to come together now."
His offense is the biggest indicator.
"I think it's just a matter of timing and being able to feel comfortable," he said, before giving credit to Dwyane Wade.
"Dwyane has been getting me the ball in the right spots to succeed," he said. "He's actually putting me in position to score, and I'm very appreciative of that."
Magloire entered Monday's game against Atlanta averaging 1.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in just 10.6 minutes per game. But in the four games before Atlanta, he'd been getting more active, averaging 6.5 points per game. He totaled six points, six rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes in Miami's 95-79 victory over Atlanta on Monday.
"I've been going against Big Cat since college," said Udonis Haslem, who attended Florida. "I've always known him to be a pretty good player all the way back to college, so I knew if given the opportunity he would help us."
HEAT 95, HAWKS 79: Dwyane Wade scored 35 points to lead the Heat to a huge victory over Atlanta.
Miami went 2-1 against the dangerous trio of Boston, Orlando and Atlanta, losing to the Celtics (98-83) and beating Magic (103-97) and the Hawks.
The Heat is just 1 1/2 games behind the Hawks. There's a chance Miami could overtake Atlanta before the week is over, but it's not a good chance.
The Heat has games against Washington, Indiana (where Miami has lost 12 consecutive games) and Dallas. The Hawks have games against New York, New Jersey and Milwaukee.
